Breaking the long silence, Cho Kyu-sung gives Klinsmann an eyeful

South Korea national football team striker Cho Kyu-sung (25, North Korea-photo) made his presence felt with a goal ahead of the announcement of the June A-match roster.

Cho scored the opening goal in the 38th minute of a 0-0 draw in the ‘Hyundai Derby’ against Ulsan Hyundai in the 16th round of the Hana OneQ K League 2023 at Jeonju World Cup Stadium on 3 March. Jun Amano’s cross from the right flank was met with a dynamic diving header. It was reminiscent of his goal against Ghana at the World Cup in Qatar. It was his second goal of the season, about three months after he scored from the penalty spot in the home opener against Suwon Samsung in March. Jeonbuk bounced back from their opening day defeat to Ulsan with a 2-0 win, thanks to a goal from Cho Kyu-sung and a second-half strike from Moon Sun-min in stoppage time.토토사이트

Last year’s top scorer in the K League One, Cho Kyu-sung used the post-season World Cup in Qatar to boost his stock. Prior to the World Cup, Hwang Eui-jo (Seoul) was the main striker for the national team, and Cho was perceived as a bench player. However, the tide turned when Hwang Ui-jo struggled in the first group game against Uruguay. In the second group game against Ghana, Cho Kyu-sung started, and although South Korea lost 2-3, he was responsible for two goals, both headers, and overtook Hwang Ui-jo as the team’s main striker.

After the World Cup, however, Cho’s career left something to be desired. He remained with Jeonbuk, where he was expected to make it to Europe, and to make matters worse, he injured his thigh during the March A-match call-up and was sidelined for an extended period. He returned to action against Suwon FC on 21 March, but remained silent, until he broke his goal drought against Ulsan on the same day after coming on as a substitute at the start of the second half.

Jürgen Klinsmann, the national team coach, was in attendance. Cho Kyu-sung scored a stunning header in front of Klinsmann as he made a show of force for the June A-match roster, which will be announced on 5 June. He made no secret of his desire to make the national team, referring to Klinsmann after the game. “I was desperate for a goal,” Cho said after the game. Our previous matches were poor, but I hope he (Klinsmann) sees only good things,” he said.

Meanwhile, in a match played on the 4th, Incheon United ended a five-match winless run (three draws and two losses) with a 3-1 victory away to Daejeon Hana Citizens, led by a brace from Mpoku and two goals from Kim Bo-seop. Daegu FC defended well from Sejingya’s late goal to beat FC Seoul 1-0 and move to fifth place after five games without a win (three wins and two draws). With a sell-out crowd for Daegu’s match, the 2023 K League 1 surpassed 1 million spectators (1,049,669) after 96 matches. This is the first time since the 2013 season, when the relegation system was introduced, that the league has reached 1 million spectators in the minimum number of games. The previous record was 108 games in the 2013 season.
