Cy Young pitcher on ‘4 days rest’ throws 120 pitches in 8 innings, 2 runs QS+…but loses decision to closer

Bauer took the loss on Tuesday against the Hanshin Tigers at Yokohama Stadium in Yokohama, Japan, after allowing two runs on nine hits and six walks in eight innings.
It was a complete-game shutout for the Yokohama offense. Bauer is 9-4 with a 2.78 ERA in 17 starts this season. He has a QS+ (7+ innings, 3 earned runs or less) in his last six starts. He is second in the league with 121 strikeouts.
Bauer was coming off four days of rest. He pitched seven innings (109 pitches) of three-run ball at Yakult on April 15, and despite the short rest, threw 120 pitches to get through the eighth inning against the league-leading Hanshin.
Ended the inning with a triple play. Two infield grounders and a fielder’s choice.
Gave up a run in the second. One out later, Noyce singled to right and Teruaki Sato doubled up the middle to put runners at second and third. Seishiro Sakamoto’s grounder to the third baseman threw the runner out at home.
After appearing to get out of the jam, he gave up a 156-kilometer fastball to Seiya Kinami for an RBI double with runners on first and third. With runners on second and third, he struck out pitcher Masashi Ito on a wild pitch to end the inning.
In the third inning, a walk and a single put runners on first and second. He got Noyce to fly out to first base to end the inning.
In the fourth inning, he gave up another run. Leadoff hitter Sato was hit by a pitch, followed by a sacrifice bunt and a grounder to second. He gave up a single up the middle to pitcher Ito to score the second run.
Two batters later in the fifth, he was hit by a pitch but retired Noyce on a groundout. In the sixth, he got two swinging strikeouts to end the inning.
He gave up a leadoff single to Ito in the seventh, but got a foul fly, a grounder to the first baseman and a swinging strikeout to end the threat.
Bauer, who had thrown 110 pitches through seven innings, took the mound in the eighth, trailing 0-2. He gave up a leadoff single to Oyama, but struck out Noyce on a grounder to second base. He struck out Sato on a 120-pitch knuckle curveball.
Hanshin starter Masashi Ito pitched nine innings of six-hit ball. It was his second complete game of the season. The Yokohama bats were limited to just two hits through the fifth inning. Both hits came after the second inning.
Yokohama put runners on first and second with back-to-back singles in the top of the seventh, but were denied a chance to score on a shortstop’s grounder. In the eighth and ninth innings, Yokohama singled with two outs, but failed to score.
