According to the Associated Press on Sept. 9, Toronto manager John Schneider said he expects Ryu to start against the Chicago Cubs on Sept. 14 as scheduled.

“The way he felt today, I think he’s going to have a good outing,” Schneider said.

It’s a relief after the heartbreaking scene the day before.

On Aug. 8 against the Cleveland Indians, Ryu was hit in the right knee by a 157-kilometer-per-hour fastball from Oscar Gonzalez with two outs in the fourth inning. Despite the pain, Ryu caught the ball and threw to first base before collapsing in pain.

“I immediately thought of all the things he’s done since his elbow surgery, and I thought, ‘There’s no way he’s going to get hit in the knee by this line drive,'” Schneider said of Ryu.

After undergoing elbow surgery in June of last year, Ryu returned to the mound against the Baltimore Orioles on April 2, 14 months after enduring a lengthy rehabilitation. In his second start, against the Cleveland Indians, he almost went down again.

His manager was even more surprised, knowing how difficult it was for Ryu to get back to the big leagues.

“He’s a tough guy,” Schneider said. He’s a big, strong guy,” Schneider said. “When he went down, I think everybody in the stadium was like, ‘This can’t go on.’ We were definitely all holding our breath,” he said of the tense moment.

Injury concerns arose, but he was relieved to be diagnosed with a bruised right knee. X-rays showed no abnormalities.

At this rate, he should be fine for his next start.

Before he was abruptly taken off the mound after being hit by a pitch, Hyun-jin Ryu looked like his pre-elbow surgery self.

He didn’t allow a single base runner until the third inning against the Cleveland offense, giving up four hits, one walk and two strikeouts. It was the kind of pitching that raises hopes for his next start.
