Japan took an early lead in the match. The Japanese attacked in waves, starting with a shot from Matsumura in the seventh minute of the first half, looking for a goal.
The pounding Japanese were pleased to go into the break with a 1-0 lead when Sakamoto surged forward and slotted home what Matsuki flicked away with his head from a free kick in first-half stoppage time.
The second half was a different story, however, as Israel came out firing on all cylinders and Japan were unable to put up much of a fight. In the seventh minute of the second half, Ibrahim stepped up his attack with a threatening shot.
But then the bad news came. In the 16th minute of the second half, substitute Banyavin was cautioned just over four minutes in, and then again three minutes later for a deep tackle to accumulate cautions.
Israel’s fighting spirit shone through despite the loss of a substitute just over seven minutes later. In the 31st minute, Israel won a free-kick and Nabi finished with a header after a scramble.
With the score at 1-1, Lemkin made it 2-1 in stoppage time. The game ended with Israel holding on for a 2-1 victory.
