Volleyball Federation “We will prepare regulations for the protection of players’ rights and fair competition”
After the 2022-2023 season, the Korea Volleyball Federation (KOVO) prepares new regulations for the protection of players’ rights and fair competition.
The federation announced on the 3rd that it had received the result of an authoritative interpretation requested by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, which is the ministry in charge, regarding whether or not the professional sports standard contract was violated due to the ‘Oh Ji-young (Pepper Savings Bank) trade’.
According to Article 4, Paragraph 3 of the standard contract, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism does not explicitly stipulate that a player’s inability to participate in the match exclusion agreement between clubs is an explicit reason for prohibiting discrimination, but the player’s rights and interests are infringed or fair competition between clubs is hindered It is believed that there are elements to be done, so it is recommended to prepare institutional improvement measures, such as the establishment of a ban on the case in the federation rules.
Based on the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism’s authoritative interpretation and recommendations for institutional improvement, the federation plans to discuss with 14 men’s and women’s clubs after the end of the season to supplement and improve related regulations in the direction of protecting players’ rights and fair competition between clubs.
The women’s professional volleyball team, GS Caltex먹튀검증 , sent veteran libero Oh Ji-young to Pepper Savings Bank in December of last year and traded the right to nominate for the first round of the 2024-2025 season.
The content of the agreement between the two clubs, which was not revealed on the surface, was only belatedly known during the Lunar New Year holiday in January this year.
The GS Caltex team proposed to Pepper Savings Bank not to put Oh Ji-young into the game against GS Caltex this season in order to balance the trade, citing the fact that the rookie nomination can be exercised after two seasons, and Pepper Savings Bank accepted it.
The Volleyball Federation explained that it approved the trade after confirming that there was no regulation in the federation rules restricting the banning of transfer players.
However, as a result of Yonhap News’ coverage, it was confirmed that the trade agreement between the two clubs could violate the basic rights guaranteed by the Constitution by discriminating against players for reasons other than skills.
This is also contrary to the content presented in the professional sports standard contract. In addition, criticism arose that the agreement to ban participation against a specific team could harm the fairness of the game.
Considering the seriousness of the matter, the Volleyball Federation requested an authoritative interpretation from the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism concluded the work with a recommendation to prepare improvements.
However, the federation concluded that it would be difficult to retroactively apply the rules to be supplemented in the future to the trade of Oh Ji-young, and according to the agreement between the two clubs, Oh Ji-young could not play against GS Caltex this season.
